Compared to other states, California has an enormous amount of training programs for future phlebotomists. On top of that, The Golden State offers the highest salaries across the nation.

California is also one of the few states that require certification and state licensing to practice phlebotomy.

For those who haven’t worked as phlebotomists before, California has the following these are general requirements to class content:

  • 20 hours of basic instruction
  • 20 hours of advanced instruction
  • 40 hours of clinical or lab practice
  • 20 successful skin punctures
  • 50 successful venipunctures

In order to get enrolled in an accredited program, you need to be a high school graduate or pass a GED test.

California State Department of Public Health wants you to graduate from one of its state-approved phlebotomy training programs in order to work as a phlebotomist. A full list of programs can be found on their website.

California Phlebotomy Certification and Licensure

To become a licensed phlebotomist  in California you will need to pass the corresponding certification from one of seven agencies that the state approves:

  • American Certification Agency (ACA)
  • American Medical Certification Association (AMCA)
  • American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT/MMCI)
  • National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA)
  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA)

Once this is done, you can apply for a state license through the California Department of Public Health website (you will need to create an account first).
